People and Places: Yuen Long

“Food has always connected me to Hong Kong culture. I love going to cha chaan tengs with friends and eating our comfort food! I have good memories of eating "出前一丁" late at night with my dad, and he would always give me half of his bowl, even though he would come back home late from work.

Growing up, it was hard for me to understand my identity and to answer the question, "Where do you come from?" Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace my Venezuelan and Hong Kong cultures, which I love sharing with others through food.

I’ll often invite friends over to try traditional meals and have good conversations. Hong Kong has a special place in my heart, and I hope to pass down Hong Kong’s cultural heritage to the next generation.”

- Janeth from Venezuela and Hong Kong

I chose several significant places in Yuen Long because of the connection with my family. My mom’s family probably worked in this area in the 1950s. My dad would bike around Castle Peak Road in the early 1970s during his childhood. Both of my parents were born in the same hospital in the same year. Coming back to my parents’ birthplace has been so meaningful for me as I continue to learn more about my family history and Chinese culture.
